Can DITA work outside Tech Pubs?

Are our business documents obsolete? Many business thinkers say that the document, as we know it, has out-lived its usefulness. A new type of intelligent document is needed to support automated business processes, enable dynamic multi-channel publishing, and make the most of important intellectual property. Most people understand that XML is a key to creating this type of intelligent document infrastructure, but very few organizations have been able to come up with an enterprise approach to XML authoring that meets the needs of both the end-user and the enterprise.

Few standards have gained adoption as rapidly as DITA has in the technical publications market. The reason is simple: DITA works! Well, this success has caught the attention of other departments outside of technical publications, who are wondering if DITA can answer their needs for a enterprise model for business documents.

DITA is an ideal candidate to unify enterprise business content, since DITA is an open standard designed to be specialized for the needs of individual departments. What’s more, an OASIS subcommittee has been established to make recommendations that optimize DITAs value for Enterprise Business Documents.
